Luka Modrić has revealed that he delayed signing his new AC Milan contract until he was certain his body and motivation were still capable of meeting the demands of top-level football.
The Croatian midfielder, who recently extended his stay with the Rossoneri until the summer of 2027, said the decision was based on careful self-assessment rather than uncertainty over his future. Milan officially confirmed the renewal in July, ensuring the 40-year-old will remain at the club for at least another season.
Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Modrić admitted last season ended on a disappointing note after Milan failed to secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
“I am very happy to continue because I enjoyed last year,” Modrić said. “Unfortunately, we did not end the season well and we did not achieve our minimum objective, which was qualifying for the Champions League. That was a little frustrating.”
Despite the setback, Modrić said the overwhelming support he received from both the club and its supporters played a decisive role in convincing him to stay.
“The club and the fans showed me a lot of affection, and they were supportive of me in every way,” he said. “The club also showed its strong desire for me to stay, and that was wonderful. I still feel the same passion and desire as before, and I intend to keep enjoying playing football.”
The veteran midfielder explained that while extending his contract had been on his mind for months, he wanted to ensure he remained physically and mentally ready before making a commitment.
“I could have signed the contract in December, but I wanted to listen to my body,” Modrić said. “I needed to understand my condition and whether I still had the same enthusiasm, desire and passion to keep playing. In the end, the answers came as I expected. I am still in good shape, I am still passionate, and I have everything I need to move forward.”
Modrić added that Milan’s confidence in him removed any lingering doubts.
“When I saw that the management still wanted me to stay, I did not have many doubts,” he said. “What Milan showed me is everything any footballer could wish for: trust and affection.”
Looking ahead, the former Ballon d’Or winner insists his ambitions remain unchanged.
“When I first came here, I said I wanted to win with Milan, and that is still my dream,” Modrić said. “I did not come here for entertainment or to pass the time. I came to win titles, and that goal remains firmly in my mind.”
