Arsenal Close In on £75m Move for Bruno Guimarães as Midfield Revamp Nears Completion

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães in a deal reportedly worth £75 million, with negotiations advancing after an extended transfer saga.

The Brazil international is understood to be keen on the move despite Newcastle’s reluctance to part with one of their most influential players. If completed, the transfer would mark one of Arsenal’s biggest signings of the summer as manager Mikel Arteta continues to strengthen his squad following the club’s Premier League title triumph.

Guimarães has established himself as one of the league’s standout midfielders since joining Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022. Known for his work rate, defensive ability and creativity, the 28-year-old enjoyed his most productive Premier League campaign last season, contributing 15 goals and assists.

His importance to Newcastle has been reflected in the club’s results. According to Opta, the Magpies have won only two of the 16 matches Guimarães has missed since arriving at St James’ Park. Their average points per game also drops significantly in his absence.

The midfielder also impressed for Brazil during the recent FIFA World Cup, registering four assists in four matches before the Selecao were eliminated in the round of 16.

Should the move be completed, Guimarães is expected to join an already formidable Arsenal midfield featuring Declan Rice and captain Martin Ødegaard. His ability to contribute in both defensive and attacking phases would provide Arteta with additional tactical flexibility and greater squad depth as the Gunners prepare to compete across multiple competitions.

Arteta has repeatedly stated his intention to strengthen the squad during the current transfer window.

“We want to take this club to a different level,” the Arsenal manager said recently. “That is going to require a better squad and better individuals. We have identified where we can improve, and hopefully we can make those plans concrete very soon.”

The Spaniard also stressed the importance of increasing competition within the squad, noting that the narrow margins at the top of English football require constant improvement.

Arsenal head into the new season with renewed confidence after ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title. The club has retained stability under Arteta while several domestic rivals begin campaigns under new or relatively new managers.

A successful move for Guimarães would further strengthen Arsenal’s options ahead of the new campaign and reinforce the club’s ambition to compete for both domestic and European honours.
